Where to Stay in Portonovo

Where to Stay in Portonovo

Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types

Portonovo is a celebrated seaside hamlet on Italy's Adriatic coast, located within the Conero Regional Park. It is not a large city but a scenic enclave of Numana, famed for its two crescent-shaped pebble beaches, Spiaggia di Portonovo and Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle, flanked by Monte Conero's white limestone cliffs. Accommodation is defined by its impressive natural setting, with historic fort-turned-hotels, family-run beach clubs with rooms, and upscale cliffside resorts overlooking the sea.

The atmosphere is relaxed and nature-focused, with a strong emphasis on seafood, hiking, and the clear water of the Adriatic. True large-scale, international chain luxury is absent. The luxury here is in the views, privacy, and connection to the pristine environment.

Numana
Budget to mid-range

A larger and more resort-like town south of Portonovo, divided into Numana Alta (the upper town) and Numana Bassa (the waterfront). The lower section has a long waterfront promenade, a marina, and sandy/pebble beaches. It offers more services and a less exclusive, more family-oriented vibe than secluded Portonovo.

  • Easy, fast road access to all points of interest on the Conero Riviera
  • Generally better value for money than beachfront or hilltop locations
  • Often features properties with pools and gardens
  • Agriturismi offer local wine and produce experiences
  • No direct beach access. Always requires a short drive
  • Traffic noise can be an issue for properties close to the main road

Accommodation Types

From budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels, here's what's available.

Historic Fort & Cliff Hotels
€200-500+ per night

Portonovo's most well-known stays, often housed in converted military forts or built into the limestone cliffs. They offer outstanding sea views, direct private beach access, and a unique sense of place. These are the landmarks of the Riviera del Conero.

Best for: Travelers seeking a unique, romantic, and scenic splurge with maximum wow factor.

Book at least 4-6 months in advance for peak season, for rooms with private terraces or direct sea views. These are the first to sell out.
Beach Club Hotels & Villas
€120-300 per night

Family-run establishments located directly on or steps from the pebble beaches. Typically include a restaurant, sun lounger/umbrella service, and rooms with balconies. The focus is on sun, sea, and superb seafood.

Best for: Beach purists and foodies who want to roll out of bed and onto a sunbed.

Opt for half-board; the on-site restaurants are often excellent, and dining options in Portonovo itself are limited in the evening.
Agriturismi & Country Houses
€80-200 per night

Rural accommodations in the hills and farmland just inland from the coast. Offer peace, swimming pools, and authentic Marche cuisine made with local produce. Good for a relaxing stay with a taste of the countryside.

Best for: Families, couples, and travelers with cars who value space, pools, and tranquility over beach proximity.

Confirm the availability of evening meals. Some agriturismi only serve dinner on certain nights or by prior arrangement.
Town Hotels & B&Bs (Sirolo/Numana)
€70-180 per night

A wide range of accommodations in the historic centers and residential areas of Sirolo and Numana. Offers more choice, better value, and easier access to shops and multiple restaurants than exclusive Portonovo.

Best for: Travelers wanting a broader Italian town experience, more dining options, and often better value.

In Sirolo, request a room with a sea view or balcony. In Numana, decide if you prefer the upper town (views) or lower town (beach access).

Booking Tips

Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.

Book very early for peak season

Portonovo has a limited number of rooms, in the well-known cliff and fort hotels. For stays in July and August, aim to book 4-6 months in advance. Beachfront rooms are the first to disappear.

A car is highly recommended

While buses connect the towns, the real magic of the Conero coast, hidden beaches, hilltop villages, and agriturismi, requires a car. Most hotels in Portonovo itself have limited, often paid, parking; book a space with your room.

Consider half-board

Portonovo's famous seafood restaurants (La Torre, Emilia, etc.) are a major draw, and hotel half-board plans often provide excellent value and guaranteed seating. Dining options are limited, so a meal plan simplifies your stay.

Clarify beach access and costs

If staying outside Portonovo beachfront, confirm your hotel's beach arrangements. Some have private agreements with beach clubs (stabilimenti balneari) for discounted loungers; otherwise, expect to pay €20-40 daily for two loungers and an umbrella.

When to Book

Timing matters for both price and availability.

High Season

For July and August, book 4-6 months in advance. For June and September, 2-3 months is advisable. Last-minute bookings are virtually impossible for the best properties.

Shoulder Season

May and late September to early October offer pleasant weather, open hotels, and more availability. Booking 1-2 months ahead is usually sufficient.

Low Season

November through April. Most hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs in Portonovo are closed. The area is very quiet. Only a few B&Bs in Sirolo or Numana may remain open.

Portonovo operates on a strict seasonal calendar. Planning far ahead is essential for the summer months. Shoulder seasons offer the best balance of good weather and availability.

Good to Know

Local customs and practical information.

Check-in / Check-out
Check-in is typically from 14:00 to 19:00. Inform your hotel if you will arrive later. Check-out is usually by 10:30. Luggage storage is generally available.
Tipping
Not expected but appreciated. Rounding up the bill at a restaurant or leaving a few euros for housekeeping is a kind gesture.
Payment
Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants. Smaller B&Bs and agriturismi may prefer cash (Euros). It's wise to carry some cash for parking, small purchases, and beach clubs.
Safety
Portonovo and the surrounding areas are very safe. Normal precautions against petty theft (don't leave valuables in cars) apply. The main hazards are natural: strong sun, sea urchins on rocky seabeds, and careful footing on cliff paths.
